I shouldn’t be here.
When I called into the radio quiz, I didn’t even know what the prize was.
A luxury vacation for two in Crete, apparently. And I have no plus-one.
Enter Nicole—the stranger who should have won. Gorgeous, fearless, and nothing like me. Where she sees adventure, I see danger. Where she says yes, I freeze.
And yet… when I first see her in a bikini, I just about lose myself. Maybe fate knows exactly what it’s doing, dropping us in this situation together.
In this blind date on steroids, Todd and Nicole are thrown together on the holiday of her dreams and his nightmares. A grumpy/sunshine romance about taking chances—and saying yes to love, even when it terrifies you.

Excerpt #1:
“Ready,” I say. Come on, you can do this!
“Final question! This is where it all counts!” Chloe continues. “In what year were the first modern Olympic games held?”
I open my mouth to answer, but… I guess I wasn’t ready for a sports question at all. Even if it is somewhat topical.
“Uhh…”
“Is it 1896?” Todd wonders.
“That’s correct! Wow, talk about a surprise outcome! Nicole started strong, but Todd caught up just in time to take the lead. How do you feel right now?”
I sink back into the sofa, still clutching the phone to my ear. Ugh. I guess fate wasn’t on my side at all. FML.
“I… ” Todd mumbles. “This is going to sound stupid, but… What was the prize exactly?”
“You don’t know?!” I exclaim in frustration. Did I honestly just lose to a guy this clueless?
“I didn’t expect to get through, just like the other times I called in…” Todd explains.
“Well, let me tell you exactly what you won,” Chloe says. “You won a last minute luxury vacation for two to Crete. How does that sound?”
Todd sighs. “Jesus. Uhh…”
I can’t stop shaking my head. It sounds like a dream come true. It sounds like exactly what I need. And Todd over here doesn’t even sound happy about it
“I’d be okay to pass—”
“Oh no, you don’t!” Kyle interrupts. “Not after telling our entire audience just now that you’ve never done anything exciting. That’s what all this was about for you. Here’s your chance to go somewhere really exciting, Todd. Now, who will you take with you?”
“Uhh… I really don’t think…” he stammers.
I can’t believe what I’m hearing. This guy almost sounds upset at the possibility of going on vacation. Meanwhile, I’m dying for a chance like this.
“Nicole?” I hear someone say. Was that Todd? Am I hallucinating?
Chloe takes a deep breath before speaking. “Are you asking Nicole to accompany you to Crete?”
The silence that follows is deafening. And that earworm of a song that played earlier, Beautiful People by Sia, keeps going on in my head on repeat. Like the universe is trying to tell me something. Because maybe this is fate. I called in, got through on the first try, lost the quiz and still…
“Umm… Yes, I mean, I don’t know who else…” Todd stammers.
This is such a dumb idea. Totally out of character for me. But then, the way I used to do things has led me down all the wrong paths. So there’s only one logical answer. I have to get out of my own way and grab this chance! Like in the song, beautiful people say yes!
“Yes!” I call out. “Hell yes, I wanna go to Crete!”
Excerpt #2:
I wasn’t going to do this. Without Nicole, I wouldn’t even have done the boat trip. I wouldn’t have had these shorts I’m trying to get into, or this shirt I’m wearing, or the absolutely humongous towel I’m currently using as a shield between the entire outside world and whatever’s left of my modesty.
And yet, here I stand, heart racing as I juggle my dignity and the absurdity of the situation. She’s right, of course. It’s just a quick change, and the water does look pretty, but I can’t shake the feeling that sooner or later her little teases and jests are going to turn into something darker. Her patience is bound to wear thin. Nobody likes a spoilsport. Even I don’t like that I do this. Always pointing out problems or finding the negative in a situation. It’s exhausting. How is she still this cheerful?
“You’ve got this,” I murmur under my breath, shifting from foot to foot, the coarse ruffles of the trunk’s waistband scraping across my bare skin on the way up. Glancing at Nicole, she seems to glow with excitement. Her laughter rings out like music as she continues to play in the water. It’s infectious. I can hardly blame her—everything about this moment is like a postcard from paradise, and it’s hard not to let that exhilaration seep into me.
There’s another kind of excitement building as well. Because ever since she’s taken her dress off and stands there in a sexy copper red two-piece, I hardly know where to look anymore. I already knew she’s beautiful. It was obvious right from the start. But now… Holy smokes. Smooth flawless skin fast far as the eye can see. Curves to die for. She’s far from a size small, yet she’s a perfect ten in my book. Her chest almost spills out of the bikini top, and the bottom… Wide hips, lusciously thick thighs, and a super sexy crease at the waist. She looks so feminine. So beautiful. I can barely stand to look.
And… Oh crap, now I’m starting to get a semi too.
“Are you about done yet? I’m going in deeper!” she calls out to me.
I exhale, hard. Think boring, unsexy thoughts. Come on, come on, come on! Taxes. My bi-annual performance assessment at work. Vacuuming my apartment…
I just about get myself under control, cast off the towel and head for the shore before anything else happens. And the cool water does the rest.
“Shit, this is pretty chilly!” I protest.
Nicole laughs and turns around. She’s already in up to her waist. Thank God, because another eyeful of her perfectly peach-shaped buttocks would have had me fleeing back to the boat for good.
