I’m starting work on The Rebound List #3, ‘Stranger’, and with it am thinking about what’s to come. This scene has been left out of Silver Fox and I’m not sure it fits into Stranger either so I may just skip it. Anyway, hope you enjoy it as a little teaser ๐
โThatโs how you said it, in that context?โ Sallyโs eyes are wide, chin about to hit the floor. โYou didnโt seriously tell Craig youโre quitting right when he was about to figure out whether to ask you on a date? Thatโs cold, no thatโs downright evil!โ
โUmm, wellโฆ Better out than in?โ I shrug, trying to hide the stabbing embarrassment that overcomes me every time I replay the conversation in my head. Sheโs right, that was absolutely terrible. I should learn to think before talking.
โYou are as tactful and subtle as a rhinoceros at times. Damn!โ Sally looks like she might burst into laughter, if only she could remember to breathe.
โFuck, I donโt know. Letโs talk about something elseโฆโ
โFine. Damnโฆ No wonder he didnโt take it very well though. Next time, please talk to me first, OK? Iโll tell you what to say and how.โ She leans forward and grabs the bottle of Merlot from the table, refilling our glasses.
โSo, Becks. Remind me whatโs next.โ Sally ย scoots closer to me and slides my glass back in my direction.
I show her the pad. Two entries crossed out, two remain.
โOhh, I like the sound of that!โ
Iโm not convinced and lean back against the sofa, taking a sip.
โYeah, I guess.โ
My tone mustโve tipped her off because she pats me on the arm reassuringly.
โSeriously, that one will be the easiest yet. Weโll go out together, I can be your wing-girl. Or whatever. Perhaps we should go to a club. Wait!โ Sal smacks the armrest of the sofa with her flat hand.
โIโve got the perfect plan! Four words: New – Yearโs – Eve – Party!โ
I sigh and let the idea sink in. Pick up some random at a party? Thatโs so not me. But then, thatโs the whole point of the list, isnโt it?
